2011 CCS China Regional Spelling Bee Information

Dear Parents:
Our school is very excited to announce that we are joining the 2011 China Regional Spelling Bee competition, leading to the final competition in the United States on May 26th, 2011! This Competition is organized by Community Center Shanghai (CCS) and it is China Region's 2nd year entering into this competition.
To learn more about this prestigious English competition with 82 years of history from USA, please visit www.spellingbeechina.com . This competition involves 11 million middle school students around the world, typically from grades 4 to 8.
Please note the important dates below:
November 15th, 2009: "Spell It" Study Guide will be given to the students
Each student in the participating grades will receive a small gift bag, with a "Spell It" book containing 1200 vocabulary words designated for the 2011 competition. Please review this material with your kids, and encourage them to study hard during the next few months.
January 19th,2011: Round One - School-Wide Spelling Bee Written Test (Test A)
All participating students will take this test. The test will consist of 25 words that students will be required to spell. The top 15 students from each school will qualify for the next round.
February 23rd, 2011: Round Two - School Champion Competition (Test B)
Only the top 15 students from each school can enter this competition. CCS will administer Test B to find the top 3 students from each school. Your school can also administer your own live Spelling Bee to find the top 3 students. However, the teacher administering the live Spelling Bee must be a native English speaker.
February 27th, 2011: Round Three - City Finalists Competition (Beijing competition begins on February 28th)
Only the champion from each school can attend this competition. The competition will take place at a sponsored school in each city. Each city will have a media event and award ceremony at the end of the competition. The top 3 students from each school will receive prizes from the CCS. The top 5 students from each city will move on to the final of the China Regional Spelling Bee. Local news media will cover the event with live reports and interviews. Parents are welcome to attend and participate.
March 19th,2011:Round Three - Round3-China Regional Final Competition
The competition will take place in Shanghai, at the Shanghai Centre Theatre located at 1376 Nanjing Xi Lu, at the heart of the city. Each city will send its top spellers to participate. The Champion will be sent to the US to represent China in the final competition held in Washington DC at the end of May, 2011.
May 24th, 2011 to May 29th, 2011:
The final of the US Spelling Bee will be held in Washington DC. The winner will receive $35000 worth of cash and other awards.
Prizes and Awards For China Regional Competition:
1st Place China Regional Winner
- A Round trip airfare for two to Washington DC, and hotel accommodation in the Grand Hyatt hotel for one week to participate in the Washington DC Spelling Bee. The winner will also receive prizes with a retail value of 5000 RMB.
2nd Place China Regional Winner
- Prizes with a retail value of 5000 RMB.
3rd Place China Regional Winner
- A prize with a retail value of 3000 RMB.
City Level Winners
- A Hitachi mini hard drive valued at 750 RMB, and a Certificate of Award from CCS
School Champion, School Runner-Up and School 3rd Place Winners
- Gold Medal, Silver Medal, and Bronze Medal
School Finalists
- Certificate of Awards from CCS
From Nov 15th, 2009 to Jan 19th, 2011, each student will have the opportunity to get to know the 1200 words to be used in the 2011 competition. This is an entirely voluntary study, outside of the regular school curriculum.
Therefore, the initiative and effort each student put into this will determine the outcome of his/her ranking in the competition.
There is also an excellent tool developed by our Gold Sponsor, Qooco, that is available for purchase online. This tool is especially helpful to students whose parents are not native English speakers.
