The Spelling Bee 82 years of history, 11 million students around the world, and China's dream to win.., What is the "Spelling Bee"? The Spelling Bee is a very prestigious English language competition held every year in the United States. Middle school students compete by spelling English words correctly as they are pronounced to them. The program is run by the E.W. Scripps with support from many corporations that donate scholarships to the winners of this program. What is the purpose of the "Spelling Bee"? The "Spelling Bee" aims to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabulary, learn spelling and vocabulary concepts, and develop correct word usage that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. Who participates in this competition? Last year, 11 million students from 275 countries and regions around the world participated in this competition. China's Entry into the Spelling Bee In 2009, on the 82nd Annual Spelling Bee, Community Center Shanghai sent its regional champion to represent China in the final competition for the first time in history. CCS has been approved by E.W Scripps to be the organizer of the China Regional Spelling Bee. The 2nd Annual China Regional Spelling Bee will be held in 2011. The Champion of this upcoming year's Spelling Bee will go to Washington DC to compete in the USA National Spelling Bee on May 29th, 2011. Eligibility For 2011, the CCS China Regional Spelling Bee will continue to be a "By Invitation Only" competition. All international schools in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou will automatically be eligible. For local Chinese schools, CCS will send an invitation to you before September 5th, 2009 to the Principal of your school. Age Limitation All students in the registered schools who have not reached their 15th birthday on or before Sept 1, 2009 and are enrolled full time (Grade 6-8) can participate, regardless of the student's original nationality. There is no under age limit. The youngest finalist in history was a 2nd grader. The recommended age group is from 10 – 15, and between 5th grades and 8th grades. Why participate in the "Spelling Bee"? The winner of the Spelling Bee not only receives scholarships totaling $40,000 USD, but also garners a considerable amount of attention from the media. Many Ivy League schools look to the Spelling Bee winners for potential students since this competition requires a very high level of command of the English language. The winners also bring a great deal of pride to the schools that they came from. Their accomplishment reflects well upon the quality of education at their schools.
